چکیده

[1] Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) polarity data for the years 1927–2002 were studied by wavelet analysis technique, which permits the identification of non-steady features in the IMF polarity data. It was found that the annual variation in the IMF polarity (the RosenbergColeman effect) is present only during the rise phase of solar cycles. This result is confirmed by the observed Bx (radial) solar wind measurements since 1964. This asymmetry could be caused by a more stable and flat heliospheric current sheet being present only in the rise phase of solar cycles, with co-rotating high speed streams disturbing it during the descending phases. This finding bears on the generally accepted explanation of the 22-year geomagnetic activity cycle.

Heliographic Latitude Dependence of the Dominant Polarity of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field

The measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field taken with the Mariners 2, 4, and 5, and OGO 5 cover several parts of the interval from September 1962 to the present and several paths through the region between 0.7 and 1.5 AU and between +__7.3 ø in solar equatorial latitude. From an analysis of these measurements we find evidence for a distinct dominant polarity effect in the magnetic fi...

Influence of interplanetary solar wind sector polarity on the ionosphere

[1] Knowledge of solar sector polarity effects on the ionosphere may provide some clues in understanding of the ionospheric day-to-day variability and “hysteresis” effect on foF2. Ionospheric response to changes in solar sector polarity has not been fully documented previously, partly due to the limitation of observations. In this study, a solar-terrestrial connection ranging from solar sector ...

Observations of the Interplanetary Sector Structure up to Heliographic Latitudes of 16 Pioneer 11

A study of the interplanetary sector structure at heliographic latitudes up to 16øN is reported. The study is based on magnetic field measurements made on board Pioneer 11 as the spacecraft raveled along the post-Jupiter-encounter trajectory. Preliminary measurements are used to determine the dominant polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field during 43 successive solar rotations including P...

Coronal Field Opens at Lower Height during the Solar Cycles 22 and 23 Minimum Periods: Imf Comparison Suggests the Source Surface Should Be Lowered (postprint)

The solar cycle 23 minimum period has been characterized by a weaker solar and interplanetary magnetic field. This provides an ideal time to study how the strength of the photospheric field affects the interplanetary magnetic flux and, in particular, how much the observed interplanetary fields of different cycle minima can be understood simply from differences in the areas of the coronal holes,...
